Gas Monitors

Oxygen is the only gas we breathe that supports life. In the air, a normal concentration of oxygen is 21%, while the rest of the atmosphere is made up of 78% nitrogen and trace gases.

Inert gases such nitrogen, argon and helium are not toxic, but they do not support human breathing and reduce levels of oxygen in the air. They are odourless, colourless and tasteless making them undetectable. A leak of these gases into an area will displace oxygen, leading to a lower concentration of oxygen. Individuals present are at risk of asphyxiation which can cause serious injury or even death. A drop in oxygen levels to 12-15% is enough to cause poor judgement, faulty coordination and fatigue. A level below 10% can cause immediate fainting, loss of consciousness and even death. Liquid nitrogen users should pay particular attention to oxygen depletion situations, as liquid nitrogen containers are designed to release excess gas pressure into the ambient.

Too much oxygen is also not desirable. Oxygen enables combustion and higher-than-normal levels significantly increases the risk of ignition and fire. It is odourless, colourless and tasteless. Levels over 23.5% oxygen are unsafe. Oxygen enrichment can occur due to leaking pipe connections, oxygen use in cutting and welding processes, liquid oxygen spills or venting for liquid oxygen containers.

The only way to safely detect oxygen depletion or enrichment situations is with real-time monitoring through an oxygen monitoring system. This safeguards users and employees in the area. Multigas supplies, installs and maintains quality oxygen monitoring systems giving business the desired peace of mind.

A carbon dioxide leak is a special case. It needs to be specifically monitored for as it will affect humans starting from levels of 3%. An oxygen sensor is not sufficient to provide adequate warning. Fixed gas monitors supplied by Multigas can be equipped with carbon dioxide sensors. Personal CO2 monitors are also available for workers working with carbon dioxide in different areas.
