Our Profile

Multigas supplies a complete range of atmospheric and special gases, complemented with related equipment and services. Its origins date back to 1926 when as L.Farrugia & Sons Ltd., it started producing and distributing carbon dioxide.

 

In the healthcare sector, Multigas produces, imports and dispenses medicinal gases through its licensed dispensary. It produces medicinal oxygen, GMP nitrogen and medical grade air.


Multigas is the leading supplier in Malta for industrial gases in the metal fabrication, pharmaceutical, automotive and electronic industry. It also supplies gas mixtures according to customer requirements and a wide range of refrigerant gases and its accredited workshop offers test and repair facilities for customer cylinders according to European standards.


In addition, the company imports and distributes welding equipment, hand tools and DIY.

Oct 1892

L.Farrugia and Sons was established in 1892 and the Farrugia family owned flour mills in Hamrun, which were destroyed during the 1919 protests, later referred to as the Sette Giugnio Riots.

Jan 1926

L.Farrugia and Sons entered the industrial gases business in 1926, when a small carbon dioxide manufacturing plant was acquired from Schutz Engineering in Germany

Jan 1928

L. Farrugia & Sons Ltd., which had become commonly known as Farsons, set up its own brewery. Farsons was eventually amalgamated with Simonds to form Simonds Farsons in 1929.

Jan 1939

Part of the the Hamrun site was destroyed during the World War ll blitz but was rebuilt within one year.

In the post war period L. Farrugia and Sons bought two gas plants -an Oxygen/Nitrogen and Acetelyne plant from SIAD of Italy. The company also commissioned a liquid Carbon Dioxide plant manufactured by Demarkus Corporation, an American Firm

Jan 1958

A larger Oxygen plant was imported in 1958 from Air Products, in the UK, in order to further increase production

Jan 1968

A new Acetylene plant was imported from Messer Griesheim in Germany in 1968 and commissioned in 1972 on a new site in Marsa. The company had started hydrogen production and was also supplying medicinal gases

By this time, the company had started hydrogen production and was also supplying medicinal gases.

During the next two decades, the company invested in its largest plant yet, a liquid Oxygen/Nitrogen plant from Cryoplants UK (BOC)

Jan 1986

Multigas was formed in 1986 to take on the gas and related business from L.Farrugia and Sons

Jan 1994

Multigas achieved ISO9001 certification for its Quality Management Systems.

Jan 2000

In 2000 Multigas was certified compliant to Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) for medicinal gases. This was followed by the issuing of Multigas Marketing Authorisation for Medicinal Oxygen in 2005, a product that we produce from source and that is essential to the Health services in the Maltese Islands.

Jan 2002

The next vital step saw the opening in 2002 of a new primary site in Kirkop accompanied by a fundamental investment in a new air separation unit and the closure of the Hamrun site

Jan 2007

Multigas was certified according to TPED (Transportable Pressure Equipment Directive) and ADR (UN Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road) for the Periodic Inspection of high pressure cylinders used by Multigas for gas supply.

Jan 2008

Multigas' Health and Safety Management System was certified to OHSAS 18001 in 2008. This was subsequently replaced by UNI ISO 45001 to which Multigas was certified compliant in 2021.

Jan 2010

In the food safety sector, Multigas gained HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) certification in 2010 which was followed by certified compliance to FSSC22000 (Food Safety Management System) in 2013.

Dec 2018

Multigas achieved ISO14001 certification for its business processes.

Jan 2019

In 2019, the company built and commissioned a new secondary site in HalFar, equipped with the latest safety and environmental systems for the handling and storage of industrial and medical gases

May 2021

Despite major challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, Multigas installed a second Air Separation Plant for additional production of Nitrogen and medicinal Oxygen. This plant complemented the first plant installed in Kirkop, providing critical supply continuity to customers in times of product scarcity in the region due to pandemic-related effects.
