Food and Beverage

Multigas works closely with all sections of the food and beverage industry to develop and deliver gas solutions that enable producers to meet food safety standards and exceed the expectations of today’s customers. Multigas's food-grade products are Carbon dioxide and Nitrogen in bulk and cylinder form and as gas mixtures. A Hazard Analysis of Critical Control Points (HACCP system) is in place and Multigas' Food Safety System is certified to FSSC 22000. Primary applications include beverage production and distribution as well as modified atmosphere packaging and cooling. Dry ice, at a temperature below 70 degrees Celcius, is used to cool containers for food preservation during transport. Please do enquire about any other needs your sector might require. Healthcare

Multigas operates in the healthcare sector through the production and importation of medicinal gases and other ancillary services including the dispensing of Medicinal gases through its licensed Dispensary. Multigas produces Medicinal Oxygen, GMP Nitrogen and Medical Grade Air. In its portfolio, it also has a number of Malta-registered BOC products including Nitrous Oxide and Entonox. Multigas holds Manufacturing and Wholesale Dealer licences for medical gases as well as a Marketing Authorisation for medicinal Oxygen. It undergoes regular audits by the Malta Medicines Authority to ensure compliance of its systems to Good Manufacturing/Distribution Practice. Products are supplied to Healthcare entities and patients as well as to Pharmaceutical manufacturers.

Aquaculture

In recent years aquaculture with its complex onshore and offshore fish farming systems has become the production of choice when it comes to meeting the rapidly rising global demand for fish. Controlling oxygen levels is the key to enhancing a fish farm’s stocking density, to keeping it disease-free and the productivity and overall profitability high. Perfectly balanced oxygen saturation: - increases fish growth rates even on higher stocking densities - keeps fish healthy and reduces mortality - improves feed conversion ratio (FCR) for feed cost savings - raises specific growth rate for increased profitability

Beverage Industry

Different gases and their mixtures are used to improve the characteristic of many beverages from wine to beer and soft drinks. Carbon dioxide gas is forcefully dissolved into the liquid using pressure — this is how mass-produced soda, sparkling water, as well as some beer and sparkling alcoholic drinks, are made.

Cryogenic Food Freezing

Cryogenic food freezing uses liquid nitrogen to effectively freeze the food products. This helps food manufacturers to maximise production efficiencies while minimising costs. The use of cryogenic gas at very low operating temperatures of -80ºC provides a high heat transfer rate that ensures quick freezing times. Cryogenic freezing also maintains the natural quality of food. When a product is frozen, ice crystals are formed. The smaller and more evenly distributed the crystals, the better the quality and taste of the frozen product. The only way to ensure that small crystals form uniformly throughout the food product, both inside and outside the cells, is to quick-freeze the food at cryogenic temperatures.

Electronics Manufacturing

Producing an integrated circuit requires over 30 different process gases for etching, deposition, oxidation, doping, and inerting applications. The range of gases used is broader than in virtually any other industry. Gases are a big component of semiconductor manufacturing because gases can create the chemical reactions needed to shape a semiconductor’s electrical properties. Due to its complexity, the gases used need to be precise and accurate at every stage of the manufacturing process to configure the semiconductor properly. As the semiconductor industry continues to grow and evolve, so do the gases used in the process. Some of the core gases used in semiconductor manufacturing include nitrogen, oxygen, argon and hydrogen.

Food Industry

Gases and gas mixtures are used to reduce the growth of bacteria and prevent discoloration, and retard the spoilage mechanisms that affect product quality, and are mostly used when packing fresh produce, raw meats (including poultry and fish), and also when packaging bakery and snack foods, such as chips and crackers. Gases used in the packaging process reduce oxidation and the growth of anaerobic organisms (organisms and germs that can survive and grow where there is no oxygen.)

Healthcare

Multigas works with healthcare professionals at public and private hospitals and clinics, supplying medical gases to enhance patient care and focusing on developing the best possible solutions for the Maltese Islands. One recent example of this was the doubling of oxygen storage tanks at Mater Dei Hospital and the introduction of bulk liquid oxygen supply to Gozo General Hospital during the Covid pandemic, ensuring the hospitals were well equipped to provide the necessary care. Multigas also supplies medicinal oxygen directly to patients through its licensed dispensary.

Gas Cutting

Oxy-fuel cutting is a thermal cutting method which uses the exothermic energy of the oxygen reaction to separate metals in the process.

Laser Cutting

Laser cutting is used, for example, in laser drilling or piercing of the starting hole. Gases suppress ignition of flammable materials and they support material removal during drilling and piercing.

Welding

Welding is probably the most common joining method used in industry today Through heat and/ or pressure two or more component parts are joined together. The parent materials melt and fuse together forming a continuous, permanent joint. Consumables or filler material may be added while the material is in a molten state to further enhance the quality, properties or size of the welded joint. The way that the heat required to melt the parent material is be applied is dependent upon the parent material type, form and productivity requirements.

Welding Plasma Cutting

In plasma cutting with nitrogen, the material is annealed up to melting temperatures and the cutting gas blows out the melt.

Wine Making Industry

Oxidation, bacteria, and spoilage are a winemaker’s worst enemies, threatening profits and sales. Nitrogen can be used to help prevent oxidation, which occurs when wine is exposed to too much oxygen. And the use of nitrogen throughout various stages of the wine-making process helps preserve color, flavour, and aroma of any wine. Pumps, hoses and bottles can be flushed with nitrogen both before and after filling. Nitrogen can also be applied to partially filled barrels or tanks to displace oxygen.
